Interview with Quest Model Management

What are the most important things you look at when considering a new model?

Modelling is not all about good looks but the overall attitude of the model as well as the "X-factor" which cannot be described in words. As the saying goes - "Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder". However, good complexion and skin is also important as well as proportionate vital statistics.

What are some of the ways you find models?

We mainly rely on incoming interview e-booking forms via our website. We do employ model agents to scout fresh faces. We are constantly on a lookout wherever we go. However we do not advertise in newspapers for recruitment of models.

Is it a waste of time for a model seeking representation just to mail in photographs?

We don't believe in e-modelling because it's really a waste of time for both the clients and the modelling agency. Photographs do not tell much about a person. That's why we want to meet potential models in person and have a short interview with them to know them better. That way we are able to identify their strong or weak points.

So once you find a model you want to represent, are they usually required to sign a contract?

It really depends. If we feel they have the potential and we can promote them effectively, we will usually sign an exclusive contract for representation. Poaching of models are very common these days and the last thing we want to know is that the model has jumped ship because another agency has promised them many jobs, etc. This usually happens when the model is not contracted to an agency. We do have freelance models but priority of jobs will only be given to contracted models.

Do new models have a lot to learn about the industry?

There are many things to learn in the modelling industry and every job undertaken by a model is a learning experience.

What would you advise new models?

Choose an agency that you feel comfortable working with. It's no point joining a top or well-known agency if you are not up to their standards. What's the use of being in there just for the name-sake when you know you cannot secure any jobs? Frankly if you are good, regardless of which agency you are going to be in, people will still look for you. Of course you should only join those reputable agencies and not those that require you to pay alot of money upfront. Don't be taken in by an agency that promises you many jobs or are willing to "sponsor" your portfolio and grooming courses. These are the agencies which you should be very careful with. Don't be flattered by their remarks!

What would you advise people who want to go into model management?

Do you mean as in managing models like a "booker"? As a booker, your contacts must be good and you must constantly meet people in the modelling industry. This way you'll expand your network and securing jobs for the models will be much easier. These days, whether you like it or not, it's all about who you know and not what you know. Most importantly, your rapport with your models must be good too.
