September 11th Disaster - The Effect on the Fashion Industry

The attack on America has long changed this country forever. This aftermath will follow the nation down the long hard road of declared war. Only days after our economy began to slump. With 100's of thousands of layoffs, unemployment climbs, as there are debates of calling this recession.

Spending trends are turning haywire, as many Americans take President Bush's advice and do their usual or extra mall hitting. While others may splurge and buy the most expensive, or "fantasy" fashions they were always looking for the right time to buy. Now might be that time.

And then there are a small percentage of people who will hold onto their money tight, only buying what they feel that is absolutely necessary. During this time of hurt and suspicion, there will be a scrimper and saver in all of us.

The new war fashions coming up will minimize minimalism with basic colors and structures. As stated in many clothing ads, true importance seems to lie in what you stand for and not standing in. We should see clothes becoming more durable and strong, without losing their comfort that would prove to be purposeful more than decorative. This could mean booms in plant and animal based fabrics, such as hemp, cottons, and leathers. The threat of biological warfare could make plastic based fabrics more prevalent as sanitation will become necessary for mental comfort. New fabrics will emerge as the fabrics of our lives.

Symbolic and good-old fashioned patriotic clothing will go to extremes to represent and inspire the country. Examples of this would be the American flag craze already taking place. Throughout the war this may be the biggest trend to emerge.

In conclusion, events like these remind us how fragile are lives are and how easily they can be taken away from us. So the best thing to do is continue living your life, go as usual, but now go stronger. The economy like ourselves needs strength as well, so my advice to America is to serve your country and go out and go shopping!
