What do you do to get the best out of
a shoot with a model?
I believe that the best photography is
the result of a strong connection to and relationship with the subject.
Thus, I tend to like to have a rapport with the models and attempt to
get to know them on a personal level before a shoot. The more I can
understand them, the more intimate a mood and feeling is created resulting
in a better shoot. As a result, most of my images seem to provoke deep
psychological responses by people rather than fleeting glances.
As an artist, what do you think of the
whole Internet phenomena?
My opinion of the internet is that it is
a powerful medium that affects modern, everyday life tremendously. It
is such an effective tool for promoting not only oneself, but art in
general. It connects people all around the world and allows them access
to images they would not otherwise have. In relation to the modeling
business, the interenet can serve as a marketing channel to promote
oneself to every agency out there. The exposure can be tremendous and
the results fruitful. Unfortunately, the internet, when misused, can
be equally as harmful and dangerous. There are plenty of scams and dishonest
people out there who set up online businesses simply to rip people off.
Especially vulnerable are those new to the industry. When scams repeatedly
occur they hurt the industry as a whole by creating a lack of trust.
So, one should always be careful when dealing with online businesses.
Who has inspired and influenced you
the most?
There are several artists who have inspired
me throughout my career. Among them are Robert Frank, Nan Goldin, and
Wolfgang Tilman.
Any advice to photographers starting
out in the fashion industry?
My best advice to photographers starting
out in the fashion industry is to be yourself and to know your craft.
The business is fiercely competitive and to be among the top you need
to have a unique eye and ability to market yourself. Send out your book/promo
card to as many art directors, magazines, and agents as possible. Needless
to say, the portfolio is probably the most important element. You might
know tons of people, but unless you have a strong portfolio and skills,
you aren't likely to get work anywhere.
What are your aims for the future?
My goal is to continue producing art and
fashion, and enjoy teaching young artists at Rochester Institute of
Technology. In addition, I am planning on having my first book out next
year.
